Staffing Policy

We are structured to be as flexible as possible. This means that we can use drivers and vehicles anywhere in the country regardless of location or size. We do not, therefore, run a fleet or employ drivers. We do use a small group of known drivers who live in the region but we have many others we have come to know over the years who live and work around the country. All are properly processed before being placed on our books.

We are unable to support individual drivers and will, as a matter of policy, only use established drivers and firms who also have other sources of work.

We are not primarily office based although we have a substantial administrative infrastructure. Consequentially, we have only one employed staff, the Director, and we do not use commercial premises — which also facilitates our ability to operate on a 24/7 basis. This, we believe, is the way forward in the modern age.

Peter Rayner, Director

Peter has an unusual background for the transport industry having spent some 25 years of his life as a consultant in child and family psychotherapy. He has an academic background and was a pioneer of new forms of strategic family therapy. He served on the first set of committees at the Association for Family Therapy and helped to organize its first annual conference at York University in the 1970s.

He was also chair of the British Association of Social Workers in Manchester and District following his return from Germany where he worked for the Ministry of Defence. He organized many media events and was a regular broadcaster in the 1980s.

His change of career to transportation came about by accident but reflects his broad interests in life and desire to keep moving forward. He does not believe in working just for the sake of it. There has to be a genuine interest. Also, he wanted to see if he could run his own business. Events since Aardvark began in the mid 1990s suggest he was successful.

Following a heart attack in 2005 he spends more time writing (see his blog ) as well as keeping Aardvark running.
